Service Animals and Assistance Animals

Determining the correct law and definition of service animal or assistance animal is important in understanding rights and responsibilities under the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) and the Fair Housing Act (FHA).  There are differences in what questions and documentation covered entities may ask/require from persons with disabilities depending on which law applies.  These materials help persons with disabilities, businesses, state and local governments and housing providers understand service animals and assistance animals under the ADA and FHA.  Contact your regional ADA Center for additional information regarding these federal laws.
