AT-on-Demand: Your Assistive Technology Instantly on Any Computer
Event Date/Time:
Location:
Description:
Currently, students and adults who need Assistive Technology (AT) are unable to use a majority of the non-personal computers they need to use. Whether it’s a library PC, a work laptop or a school classroom computer, these computers are accessible to all but AT users. Almost all computers throughout the library or school have no AT. Some places have a couple computers with a couple AT - but even those are often not the right AT and none are set up to meet an individual’s needs. Not being able to access shared-use or public computers puts people with disabilities at a severe disadvantage and jeopardizes their access to advancement, online programs, and other services available to their peers. This is especially a problem in under-resourced communities where there is often no computer at home and community computers are all a student has to do homework or independent work. However, with the help of government funding, a free, open-source service called AT-on-Demand has been developed to overcome these barriers. AT-on-Demand allows users to have their AT automatically installed and set up for them on any computer they sit down to and disappear when they are done. Attendees who join this session will learn about AT-on-Demand and its wide range of uses in advancing equitable and inclusive digital access - and how to get it free of charge, permanently.
