Transportation Interpretation

The federal government has issued several opinion letters on the ADA in response to direct inquiries since 1992. These letters are to be considered informal guidance only.

General

  • This letter is in response to a request for clarification of the transportation provisions of the Americans with Disabilities Act of 1990
  • Nondiscrimination requirements applicable to transportation provided by hotels, motels, and airports.
  • Information about the transportation provisions of the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA).
  • Part B of title II of the ADA establishes accessibility standards for the operation of public transportation systems.

Paratransit

  • Under certain circumstances, the ADA also requires public entities to provide comparable paratransit service for persons with disabilities.
