Spanish Language Outreach Stage 2 Video Series
The goals of this ADA National Network Spanish Language Outreach (SLO) project video series are to address the barriers identified during interviews with community members and professionals around disability and to provide information related to the ADA in a format tailored for Latino communities. The videos are intended for Spanish-speaking community members as well as those who provide services, resources, and support for individuals in the Latino community.
People often play multiple roles in their community. Whether someone has a disability, is a family member of a person with a disability, or is a professional working with the Spanish-speaking community, everyone has a role to play in supporting people with disabilities and making sure rights are respected. Watching these videos may help increase community members’ awareness of and empower them to exercise their rights under the ADA.
All the videos are free to watch and share, and are available in Spanish and English. There are a total of six videos in the series. Each video builds on the one before it, so it is recommended that you watch the videos in order.
Introduction to the video series
The introduction to the video series gives an overview of the video series by discussing the project’s background, explaining the video series’ goals, and explaining the topic for each video.
Part one: Disability, stigma, and language
To understand disability rights, first it is important to understand concepts relating to disability. This video covers different meanings of disability, provides examples of visible and invisible disabilities, and discusses stigma and the importance of talking about disability. This video also introduces examples of individuals navigating their doubts and concerns about the ADA and shows how individuals can use the ADA National Network to get answers to their ADA questions.
Part two: Barriers for the Latino community
This video discusses barriers that members of the Latino community may have to accessing information about the ADA and rights. These issues include language barriers, lack of information about rights, and cultural aspects of discussing disability and health conditions. The videos also discuss ways of addressing these barriers, including recommendations from community members for increased awareness of disability and civil rights under the ADA and the ADA National Network's efforts to address this information gap for Spanish speakers.
Part three: Introduction to rights
This video discusses basic concepts and important definitions for general rights, human rights, and civil rights, as well as the history of the civil rights movements in Latino and disability communities. It also provides a brief overview of legal terminology and an overview of what steps to take if you face disability discrimination.
Part four: Introduction to the ADA
The objectives of this video are to provide an overview of the ADA, describe the definition of disability under the ADA, and show real world applications of the ADA through examples. The video explains how the ADA is structured and describes which organizations and entities have obligations to provide accommodations, modifications, and effective communication to individuals with disabilities.
