People with Disabilities and Parking: Accessible Parking for Businesses and Consumers

Event Date/Time:

Tuesday, August 26th, 2014
10:00 AM PDT - 11:30 AM PDT

Location:

Online Webinar

Description:

Accessible parking is a multi-faceted program. During this 90 minute webinar we will discuss why accessible parking exists in the first place. We will further discuss several other issues with regard to the construction and design of accessible spots, such as the following:

  • What should an accessible parking space look like and how does one designs an accessible parking space?
  • What are some of the errors made when constructing, providing, or maintaining an accessible parking space?
  • Who can use accessible parking places?

We will also discuss the use of accessible parking in housing. Housing is covered under the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) and the Fair Housing Act, both of which we will address. We will discuss the application of accessible parking in apartment buildings and condominiums.

This webinar will also cover the topics of 'reasonable accommodations' and 'reasonable modifications' and when an employee may need an accessible parking space as a reasonable accommodation for their disability. Accessible parking is an integral part of the accommodation process.

Lastly, “Who can park on an accessible parking spot and what does my "disabled parking placard" allow me to do?” is a question the Northwest ADA Center frequently receives. There are individual laws for individual states, and we will address Alaska, Idaho, Oregon, and Washington State as examples.
