    Libraries are increasingly positioned as the hub of institutional digital accessibility work—but infrastructure without investment in people is merely compliance theater. This session traces how the University of Virginia Library is building a distributed accessibility ecosystem anchored not in tools and technical standards, but in the humans who sustain them. Using the UVA Library Digital Accessibility Working Group (DAWG) as a case study, participants will explore what it looks like to treat training and capacity building as strategic decisions, not afterthoughts, leaving with a framework for building sustainable accessibility infrastructure.     This year we celebrate the 250th anniversary of the adoption of the Declaration of Independence, and the 36th anniversary of the signing of the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA). When President George H. W. Bush signed the ADA into law, he said we celebrated “another ‘independence day,’ … long overdue” for people with disabilities. Join us for this session as we revisit some of the pivotal events of the disability rights movement, recognize some of the pioneers who led the way, and acknowledge the power of community that keeps us moving forward on the journey from isolation to inclusion of people with disabilities.

    Session hosts The Pacific ADA Center, in partnership with the ADA National Network. Details People with disabilities experience significant disparities in health and healthcare outcomes. This is largely because Healthcare Organizations (HCOs), even the most well-intentioned, remain inaccessible. The Disability Equity Collaborative’s (DEC) latest resource, “Accessible Healthcare for People with Disabilities: An Implementation Guide for Healthcare Organizations,” is one of the few resources available to support HCOs in delivering equal access to care for their patients with disabilities. Whether your organization is a small clinic or a large health system, join us to learn how you can use DEC’s Implementation Guide to establish system-level processes that facilitate equal access to care for your patients with disabilities. We will review the Guide’s four chapters; dive into the step-by-step guidance, tools, and resources provided; and share other organizations’ experiences using the Guide to improve access to care. Presenters Dr. Megan Morris is the Founder and Director of DEC. She is a faculty member in the Department of Rehabilitation Medicine at New York University Langone Health. The goal of her research is to improve the quality of health and healthcare services for people with disabilities. Specifically, she seeks to understand and address both structural and interpersonal ableism that affects the care received by this population. To achieve this, she has developed a comprehensive research program focused on: (a) creating and implementing systematic methods for documenting patients’ disability status and accommodation needs in the Electronic Health Record; (b) improving communication and interactions between healthcare teams and people with disabilities through educational and clinical interventions; and (c) evaluating the implementation and effects of disability healthcare policies on provision of accessible healthcare. She has served as a PI on multiple funded studies to support these initiatives. Her research and advocacy are deeply informed by both personal and professional experiences with ableism in the healthcare setting. Eve Schoenberg is the Project Coordinator for DEC at NYU Langone Health. Previously, she spent three years working on Capitol Hill in communications and health and disability policy roles.

    Between the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA), Fair Housing Act (FHA), Section 504, and general building codes, housing standards can be confusing for those with nondiscrimination requirements under the law as well as individuals with disabilities looking to live independently or age in place. In this webinar, attendees will learn practical design standards that go beyond minimal code compliance—so you can recognize quality accessibility when you see it (or request it when you don't). Our speakers will share a Reference Guide and Kitchen and Bathroom Prototypes that they developed to reflect an inclusive design approach to plan for accessibility in any housing type. This session would benefit architects, builders, developers, planners and community development professionals, municipal officials who review plans and anyone invested in housing that serves people across their lifespan. When accessibility is built in from the blueprint stage, everyone gains the freedom to age in place and adapt their homes as needs change. We're all aging. Let's design for that reality from day one.     The complexity of the built environment poses numerous and evolving wayfinding and other accessibility challenges for pedestrians with vision disabilities (PVD). Tactile Walking Surface Indicators (TWSI) are one tool that can be used to improve accessibility and safety within public-rights-of-way. In this webinar, the speakers will briefly review the requirements in the Public Right-of-Way Accessibility Guidelines (PROWAG) for detectable warnings on curb ramps and platform edges and outline the considerable research evidence that supports recommendations for the design and use of other types of TWSI that go beyond alerting PVD to a transition from a pedestrian to a vehicular way. Uses for other types of TWSI include but are not limited to: Indicating locations of transit stops and midblock crosswalks, orienting PVD to the direction of travel on crosswalks, and delineating the boundary between sidewalks and separated bicycle lanes. Registrants will be able to submit questions in advance during the registration process.
