Addiction, Recovery and the ADA

Substance use is a topic that has received a lot of press in the last couple of years. In this session, we will look at alcohol addition, and opioid and substance use disorders through an ADA lens. Are people who use alcohol covered under the ADA? How about people who use substances illegally? What does ADA coverage mean? We will define who is and isn’t a person with a disability in this context with supporting scenarios.

After completing this session, participants will be able to:

• Look at addiction and recovery through the fresh lens of the Americans with Disabilities Act
• Define disability in terms of the addiction and recovery
• In employment, discuss the differences between how the ADA addresses alcohol, opioid and substance use disorders
